more than a school

It's a community

The Uhuru Village School believes that it truly takes a village.  Over 12 quarters we take our students from early African civilizations through modern day and sprinkle in literacy, numeracy and 21st century skills along the way. We know that families are busy so students have the option of participating each quarter live virtually, face to face or self paced.  After completing the introductory  module, families can  select which quarters they choose to participate and rejoin us  at various  points along the way.

SESSION OVERVIEW

During each 60 minute class students collaboratively learn about African American history, explore exciting African American literature, and practice a range of durable skills that will support their future success in career and life.  After completion of each quarter students are awarded a badge and certificate.  After students  complete all 12 quarters they are invited to participate in a rites of passage graduation ceremony and be celebrated by family and friends!

LITERARY LEARNING MODULES

Over the course of the 12 six week sessions students will be exposed to a range of literature that will deepen their understanding of America's history and the African American experience. Prior to each six week session we will provide parents with additional information on the anchor text.  We believe that a family that reads together succeeds together, so we will also provide family discussion questions for the anchor texts.

DURABLE SKILLS

In order to be prepared for college, career and life, we believe that a strong foundation in academic skills coupled with interpersonal skills are the key to being prepared for whatever life brings your child's way.  All Uhuru Village Academy students will be provided with access to personalized learning software in ELA, math, science and social studies.  Our learning coaches will provide parents with some optional assignments based upon identified opportunities for growth (yes, even the most advanced students have opportunities for growth!).  Learning coaches will monitor student progress along the way and provide feedback to both student and the parent.

In addition to academic skills, our learning coaches will support students in building interpersonal skills such as those outlined in the America Succeeds Report on Durable Skills which "include a combination of how you use what you know – skills like critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity – as well as character skills like fortitude, growth mindset, and leadership."

BADGES AND RITES OF PASSAGE

Upon the successful completion of each of the 12 modules students will be awarded a badge to mark their accomplishment.  After earning 12 badges students will be invited to participate in a very special rites of passage graduation ceremony to celebrate their accomplishment with family and friends.
