About us

The Uhuru Village School was founded by parents that have also built successful careers as professional educators in public schools. We felt as if we were falling short in our role as parents and as educators in preparing our African American children for the world we live in. As busy working parents we just didn't have the time to individually engage our children in high quality lessons on African American history and culture. As public school educators we found that the curriculum was already packed with state mandated standards and there just was not time within the school day to teach all the beauty and nuances of African American history and culture. We didn't want to create a comprehensive homeschool, we love our local school! It's just that we were asking it to do something it wasn't designed to do. The Uhuru Village Academy is intended to be a supplement to the traditional school curriculum so that our children can LEARN their history and culture, KNOW that they are beautiful, capable and empowered to DO impactful work on behalf of themselves and the community.
